The Baret House Terrarium is named for French explorer, Jeanne Baret. In 1706, with the help of her employer, botanist Dr. Philibert Commerson, Baret disguised herself as a man and joined the French expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Baret and Commerson collected over 6,000 plant specimens from the south including: Brazil, Jamaica, the Strait of Magellan, Tahiti, Mauritius, and Madagascar. Commerson's ill health often prevented him from fieldwork, and therefore, the majority of the specimens were collected by Baret. This included the discovery of Bougainvillea, which was named for the expeditions commander. Although not recognized in her own lifetime, Jean Baret was an accomplished botanist and was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. The Baret House Terrarium features a hipped roof, and a repeating horizontal straight line design, reminiscent of the longitudinal coordinates Baret used to cross the world.
